As a first-year engineering student, member of the Honors College, and Boilermaker, I have an eagerness to utilize my knowledge, a drive to challenge myself through new experiences, and a desire to develop the skills necessary for success in the global workforce. I am pursuing a degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering with a focus on Dynamics and Controls with a minor in Computer Science, and I seek to augment this knowledge with GEARE. Through a study abroad experience in high school, I developed a hunger for international experience. I participated in Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Languages, an intense language immersion program. I lived with a host family for two months and took classes in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain. Over those two months, I learned the incredible value of experiencing other cultures and attained fluency in Spanish. As a student of both German and Spanish, GEARE would provide me with the opportunity to develop my language skills. In addition to language skills, I would work to develop awareness of other cultures. Today’s workplace is at the intersection of hundreds of unique cultures and identities. To be an effective team member, it is absolutely essential to be sensitive to cultural differences and recognize that a team with diverse backgrounds has tremendous power to engineer the solutions of tomorrow. Through my prior experience abroad, I have come to learn firsthand how beneficial understanding of a new culture can be. After just 2-months living in Spain, I found myself with an appreciation for the rich culture of the Spanish people. This appreciation has allowed me to approach problem solving in an untraditional way.
