During my time at Muskegon Community College, I was able to discover what I wanted to study. I was enrolled in a geography class and I was learning about science in a completely new way. I loved the research, hands-on learning, and the experiments. We learned many different fields of science within that class, but geology and environmental science were the subjects I was fascinated by. Through these subjects you learn about the history of the Earth and how it has evolved over time, which was fascinating to me. This fascination with the Earth prompted me to eventually enroll in a geology class. This class has given me a better understanding of geological processes and how each of these processes has worked together to create how we see Earth today. I believe that Earth is a never-ending mystery because it is constantly evolving. Science is always seeking to answer questions about the mystery that is Earth, and I would like to be apart of helping answer …show more content…
I was able to go on an experiential learning trip with fellow MCC students and faculty to Mammoth Cave National Park in Spring 2016. During this trip we were able to study the geology of the caves and how they had formed. This trip was an amazing experience and was the first time I was able to specifically study geology in the field. I found this experience to be fascinating and I wanted to learn more. I wanted to be able to join other experiential learning trips where I could study what I loved. This was one of the reasons why I became interested in Hope College’s Geological Sciences program. The focus that is put upon studying and research in the field at Hope College is immense. The ability to learn something from other than your textbook is important in my academic success. Hope College and the S-STEM scholarship program seem to align with this type of learning
