Awed by the world of science that’s often invisible, yet vital to life such as the way cells battle for survival, has sparked my interest in the intricacy of the human anatomy and physiology. This initiated a sense of curiosity to research this further and thus pursue a career in biomedical sciences and healthcare. From the insight experience of volunteering in a care home, I have enriched the skills of dedication and the needless care for elderly patients. My confidence has grown after witnessing the reality of geriatric healthcare, with greater impact of illnesses which reflected the consequences of physical and mental deterioration in elderly patients. This strengthened my organisation skills with computer and technical skills. Whereas, having shadowed a Healthcare assistant and attended Stop Smoking Clinic, I had first-hand experience of how crucial empathy and interpersonal skills are. Having partaken in the Contender Charlie, Leadership programme; leading project for children with additional needs, I was able to use these skills and further developed my communication and leadership skill. Whilst at the practice, I witnessed an emergency, where a patient had a cardiac event. The decision making skills and working under pressure expressed there, was something that I built upon during Bronze to Gold DofE and NCS where teamwork was important in keeping high morale and completing tasks. The observation of a blood glucose test, ECG and spirometry demonstrated how science bridges the gap between alimentary and medicine, as well as the significance of scientists in the healthcare
