To venture into the finest details of different animal species and gain an in-depth knowledge on their evolutional traits, anatomy, physiology, behavioural characteristics and the conjunction between an animal to the environment, would not only be the most fascinating subject to endorse myself in, but to also pursue a career in a topic that I have always had a strong passion for would be inconceivable. An excellent example of these skills tied together was in my recent trip to Western and Borneo Malaysia. To celebrate my achievements from college and to put all my skills and passion together, I organised a month long trip to work closely with the Bornean Orang-utan, Malaysian Sun Bear and other primates/mammals including the Chimpanzee and Pygmy Elephant. The first two weeks of the trip was working with captive primates and Malaysian Sun Bears to increase their stimulation by providing a variety of enrichment and educating the local's on the importance of these species, things we can do to help them and how it's vital for them to perform natural behaviours such as foraging and nest building, even in captivity. The last two weeks of the trip was in a small village in Borneo, helping to physically maintain the jungle and plant trees in sites that have previously been logging sites. But to also monitor and observe the wildlife along the river Kinabatagan, then feeding the data logged to conservational charities and organisations such as the WWF to help gain data on the animal population and activity.
