Standing in the shallow waters of Rodriguez Key in the Florida Keys, surrounded by well protected sea life, reminds me of the hard work NOAA scientists have conducted to conserve these coastal habitats. Being exposed to the wonders of nature through the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary has truly inspired me to pursue not only a career in environmental science but also in heritage studies through anthropology. Seeing the importance of the ocean in the Florida Keys culture has pushed me to embrace an interdisciplinary approach in research and studies. This scholarship and internship opportunity would allow me to strengthen my studies in both fields and provide real hands on experience in one of the largest science organizations in the U.S. Potentially working with the National Ocean Service presents numerous opportunities for me to expand my interest in both my fields of studies through their various departments and research centers. As I got to know my academic community and gained what we call at FIU the “World’s Ahead” perspective, I began to make connections between the social and natural sciences which drew me into pursuing two bachelor degrees in Anthropology and Environmental Studies. Anthropology, my initial field of study, allows me to explore the world’s cultures and the foundations of society. My studies inspire me to approach applied anthropological studies, to make a difference in the world and develop stronger communities. After a year of studies at FIU, I decided to expand my undergraduate studies by applying for a second bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies with a minor in Geography.
