According to the program goals of the bachelors in psychology for the University of Maryland “Apply major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology to prepare for graduate studies or careers in which psychological training is relevant. Apply basic knowledge of research methodology, statistics, measurement, guidelines, ethical standards, laws, and regulations in order to design, participate in and to evaluate research in a variety of contexts. Apply knowledge of human behavior to inform personal growth, communicate effectively, solve problems, make decisions and interact with individuals, communities, and organizations. The “Apply major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in to prepare for a graduate level degree I have learned in several classes along my time in the program (University of Maryland University College, 2018). There is a long and rich history in the field of psychology starting with the Greeks (Psychology, 2018). While I learned a large amount throughout my time as a student one class that reviewed the history of psychology the best was Social Psychology. One of the most interesting things that I found out about the history was the harsh treatments that individuals went through before there was an understanding of mental illness, and how the brain functions. For my understanding of empirical studies, I would turn to my introduction to clinical psychology class. We conducted several analyses of studies we truly broke them down and looked at what they were parts of the study and what worked/did not work. While I was in my degree program I was able to take a class in critical thinking in my job. This class allowed me to understand the complexity of how critical thinking works, and the traits required for critical thinking. One of the main things I took away from this class is to ask questions. There are many aspects of critical thinking which involve asking questions, be willing to wonder, define the problem, examine the evidence, analyze assumptions and biases, avoid emotional reasoning, don’t oversimplify, consider other interpretations, and tolerating uncertainty (Wade & Tarvis, 2018). In my theories of personality class, we were asked to conduct discussion boards on a weekly basis within these discussion boards we not only had to use critical thinking, but as well develop skeptical inquiry, and appropriate technology and the scientific approach to solve problems related to current and emergent trends within the domains of psychology. The instructor would give us a discussion assignment, and then use this platform to increase our understanding of subject matter. Our grades would reflect if we did not use critical thinking techniques, and each week we would be asked question that would allow for deeper thinking on the subject matter.
