I am applying for your Ph.D. in the Kinesiology program with the intention of building upon my relevant previous experience and education in preparing me towards my career. As a result of my enduring interest in sports, I studied Anthropology of Sport at the University. During my internship at the University of Calgary (U of C) through the Student for Development Program, I learned about the possibility and opportunity of studying sports at the University. Mather as my supervisor. It was under his guidance that I reassessed my disposition to become a sports researcher. The courses and topics covered focus on relevant research methods and theories. This added to my knowledge and understanding of sports and research. The core of my study focused on the analyses of sports-related social problems. My interest was to acquire thorough knowledge on what influences sports participation for vulnerable, and excluded populations. My study participants were women. My supervisor greatly influenced and encouraged me to excel academically. He got me to read Blanchard’s Introduction to Anthropology of Sport: An introduction, Wacquant’s Pugs at Work: Bodily Capital and Bodily Labour among Professional Boxers and Spradley’s The Ethnographic Interview and Participant Observation among others. Reading these books had a great impact on me. I want to be able to clearly explain such important ideas like they did. With regards to cancer survivors, I will assess how participating in a group physical activity, can influence health and social behaviors. Additionally, I will like to examine how this can impact on their general wellbeing (physical and psychological). For older adults, I will assess how social support interventions through physical exercise can promote and maintain their social networks and welfare. My study in Anthropology of Sport equips me with appropriate academic and research background for this
