Applying Themes In Relation To Medicine In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

I began pursuing medicine a year ago when I switched my major from Music Therapy to Psychology with a pre-medicine specialization. My goal was to start my journey toward becoming a board-certified Psychiatrist. I started shadowing physicians and working with them to learn about the healthcare industry. Through shadowing a physician and being exposed to clinical patient care, I have learned that a physician’s responsibilities aren’t limited to only diagnosing patients and prescribing medications. Physicians are also responsible for establishing a genuine and interpersonal bond with their patients. Human beings thrive off socialization and are inheritably social creatures. (Zolnierek et al., 2016) When Victor and the creature don’t have the support of friends, they become frustrated and overwhelmed with their inability to form relationships with others. (Shelley, 1818) This can be true in the medical field too. A physician needs to use skills involved in befriending people to help build meaningful bonds and positive experiences with patients. (Castro et al., 2016) Without the ability to do so, one can say the physician is without a job, as patients are needed for a doctor to stay employed. This cannot happen it patients don’t feel a positive bond with their physician. (Zolnierek et al., 2016) In Frankenstein, the creature “has no one with whom to share his experiences and frustrations, so his life becomes unbearable, and he lashes out violently.” (Eschrich, 2017) The creature’s frustration from its' lack of companionship causes it to become dangerous to those around it. Similarly, patients that don’t seek help regarding their health can cause the people around them to worry, or feel concerned.
