Ethan Frome, who has to face multiple conflicts throughout the book with his nonstop dream to be an engineer which is crushed due to the illness of, Zeena, his cousin, but who also happens to be his wife. Also a love begins to grow mid way through the book between a girl named Mattie and Ethan, even though he is still married to Zeena which ultimately leads to the distance between their love. In the book Ethan Frome, the feeling of isolation in Ethan and Zeena becomes more prominent, while anger grows between Ethan and Mattie from having denying their love, which contributes to the many mistakes and downfalls Ethan has to face throughout the book.
In the novel Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton the narrator tells the readers how he met the main character,Frome, in Massachusetts. Edith Wharton takes the reader twenty-four years into the past and there we see that Frome is a young man,who chased after an education in science, but when his father dies he is forced to return back to the farm. After that his mother becomes ill and his cousin Zeena comes to take care of her,but when his mother dies, Frome marries Zeena out of loneliness. As time passes by Zeena becomes more sick, due to this their marriage is without love and Frome feels very lonely and has no one to talk to. Happiness is something humans have been pursuing for centuries. The quest for happiness is so cemented in the minds of human beings that it has been used as a method of control, and as a weapon against others. Humans are moths, ever drawn to the distant flame of joy. Over the past year I have learned much about this pursuit that has plagued humans for millennia. Pieces of literature like The Great Gatsby, Of Mice and Men and The Devil and Tom Walker all explore this pursuit in unique and diverse ways.
1. Jim Burden describes happiness on page 17 as “to be dissolved into something complete and great. When it comes to one, it comes as naturally as sleep.” Antonia would agree as she gained her happiness from the outdoors and nature. When Jim made this description of happiness he was sitting down in the middle of a garden and leaning on a pumpkin.
In order for a piece of literature to live on throughout time, there has to be an element that makes it stick with you. There has to be something that makes you think about the book days after you have read it. Edith Wharton uses character archetypes in her novel Ethan Frome to do this. The use of common types of characters makes you relate the piece of literature to others you have read before, or even relate them to yourself. Wharton purposely does this with Ethan, Mattie, and Zeena for that reason.
This is achieved through adding a sense of realism as to how happiness should be experienced. Thus, it provides tangible means for people to grasp an abstract concept such as happiness. As a result, this enables her to persuade readers to take up her advice. For example, she draws links between the need to experience happiness with others through studies and real-life evidence regarding the lack of the time spent with others e.g., only 24 hours a year spent socialising (Whippman, 2017). This shows us the real-life implication of our actions in search of isolated happiness which has caused an unintended outcome on us as we are supposed to share joyous moments together.
People live all their lives trying to chase dreams. Most people do and those are the risk takers they ones who aren 't afraid to try even if the future is uncertain. The ones who don 't try often look imagine how their life could have been if they had taken that risk. In the book Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton we see the main protagonist Ethan lack the courage to chase his dream and in the end pays the price for it. In the book he is dealing with inter conflicts between two women.

With nothing risked there is nothing gained, effectively preventing his life from moving forward or backwards. Furthermore, risk does not always yield change, as sometimes the change is the risk, a deviation from the normality of one’s life. Ethan’s inability to take risks keeps his life stagnant, immune to change like a decomposed corps in a grave.

The setting of the novel Ethan Frome creates an atmosphere which helps establish the character of Ethan Frome himself. Ethan is a man living a very depressing life in Starkfield, Massachusetts with his wife Zeena, whom he doesn't feel affectionate towards and only married because he's afraid to be alone. The environment he’s in is the only reason why he fell in love with Mattie.
Kirsten Dunst once said, “You can never control who you fall in love with, even when you're in the most sad, confused time of your life. It just happens.” This quote relates to the relationships between the characters in Ethan Frome. The relationships people have with each other can affect them in a negative or positive way, and in Edith Wharton's novel, Ethan Frome, Ethan Frome and Mattie Silver enjoy a unique relationship that affects them both in a positive way. One positive effect of Ethan Frome and Mattie Silver’s relationship is that Frome initiated to invest more thought into his actions.
In Edith Wharton's famous book Ethan Frome, main character, Ethan Frome’s story is a personal tragedy. His own decisions he makes are his own fault. But what is his tragedy? Well, to a certain understanding, his tragedy is that in the present day, he is always dreary and not as happy as he could have turned out; in other words, one could say that his tragedy is that he is unsuccessful in happiness. A fundamental characteristic that changes based on this emotion is someone's affinity towards cordial exchange; people have preferences towards isolation or togetherness because of what makes them feel joyful.
The author’s purpose is to advocate that it’s okay to not be happy all the time; You can’t and don’t need to be happy in order to live a fulfilled life. The author writes in a very casual tone, humorous at needed moments while serious and sadly relatable at others. This sincere tone suggests Burrough’s intention is to simply create a comfortable connection with his audience, gradually gaining the reader’s interest in his own ideas and thoughts.
Readers may not always be aware of the careful consideration involved in the narrative aspect of literature, but its significance should not be overlooked, for narration can play an enormous role in the development and reception of a novel. All are components of that which constitutes a narrator, and all have the ability to dramatically alter the manner in which a story is relayed to the audience.

There is a delicate balance that must be reached between the pursuit of happiness, satisfaction, and contentment.
