Jerrione Mosley In the book Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi Coates writes a letter to his son revealing the reality of life, growing up as a black man. Coates mostly focused on how black lives and bodies lacked value in America and could be possibly destroyed or taken away at any time. He also talked about “The Dream”, which is the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. The lack of values and importance for the black race is highly in effect.
I. There has always been a negative perception regarding the city of Washington D.C. It is truly one city that is universally hated for one principal reason. It is the center of American politics. Mark Leibovich truly illuminates this in his book, This Town. His take on Washington showcases how the democratic institutions that have been put in place by our founding fathers during the beginning of our nation are the key components that politicians from both sides of the aisle use to create political gridlock.
In the Lake of the Woods by Tim O’Brien explores the human mind and the psychological mechanisms that people use to protect themselves from the truth. The novel follows John Wade, a politician who just lost a race for senator because the truth came out that he was involved in the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam war. Wade and his wife then go on vacation on the great lakes in Minnesota. The story examines Wade’s childhood and his relationship with his wife Kathy. One night Kathy goes missing and a boat is missing.
In the short story “Gryphon” by Charles Baxter, Tommy`s fourth grade teacher gets sick, so the next day when the students arrive to their classroom they have a substitute teacher. The substitute teacher Miss Ferenczi and the Mr. Hibler the real teacher have different ways of keeping the students engaging the students. Mr. Hibler, teaches out of a book and when he is teaching English literature his students do not fully engaged in the material as he goes through it. From the students’ point of view, Mr. Hibler’s class is not that fun. Mr. Hibler has a time for everything such as English, math, and recess, but he only teaches the students what they need to know, and not any of the fun facts that surround the material that is currently being
Every day of our lives we are faced with the opportunity to believe and tell many tales, whether true or false, and exaggerations of daily events. Life is almost like a game of cards, we’re all given cards and it’s up to us to decide what, when and how we’re going to play them. Tim O'Brien uses the theme of storytelling in his book, The Things They Carried, to teach lessons from the war, and allow us to understand the baggage that he along with his fellow men carried. When storytelling the main idea is to connect people to the stories being told and the past to the future.
Night Essay Night has many themes, but when reading the book the main themes were, religion,violence and imprisonment. These themes all have there opposites also. Imprisonment played a big roll in the book because they book is telling you what it was like to be held hostage during the holocaust, what it felt like, what they did to survive. While being imprisoned for being jewish, they were also separated from their families, well Elie stayed with his dad but he got separated from his mother and sister, and couldn't do anything about it because if he tried he would most likely be thrown in a pit of fire. Being imprisoned comes with more than just being taken, Elie was starved, and just hated by everyone.
A theme from Elie Wiesel’s memoir “Night” is losing faith in god. I think that this is a theme that presents itself throughout the book. Elie shares his story of being brave and persevering through the holocaust. Elie bears witness to the horrifying events and showed a clear representation of what a jew would be going through during WWII.
The article Its Hard to Make it in America: How the United States Stopped Being the Land of Opportunity written by Lane Kenworthy is about how equal opportunity varies in America. Although America is known for being the land of opportunity, a lot of other factors play a role in how successful a person can be. A lot of these factors can be contributed to economic and and social shifts that have been happening in the United States. Some possible solutions include: getting money into hands of low-income families, improving family relations, improving schools, employment, affirmative action. I believe that this article is primarily written for the average American who may not be aware of the issues regarding equal opportunity.
In The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, the truth is distorted. O’Brien’s writing style cause the readers to question whether the novel is based on the truth or not. The author distorts the point of view, voice, and time for the readers to discerns the truth. Tim O’Brien uses both first and third-person narrative in the novel. Throughout the novel, O’Brien’s perspective is not constant and shifts between first and third-person.
Elie Wiesel’s autobiography Night, shows many parallels between the topics we have been covering in class. The largest of these themes is that of John Stuart Mill, although this is not the only theme it will be my focus. John Stuart Mill suggests that individuals should question their own beliefs in an attempt to find the upmost truth. Mill used the term reasoned discourse to farther explain his belief, it suggests that each individual should constantly be looking for truth in their own options, goals, and beliefs. This principle suggests that each individual should always assessing their situations and surroundings to best build their moral compass and character.
The struggle for survival was a central theme in each of the week’s works. How does one survive in the face of horror? How does one survive in loneliness? How does one survive in the arms of the enemy? How does one survive with guilt?
The most prominent theme in both the book and the film is the perspective and attitude towards society. It is clear throughout that the perspective and attitude towards society of McCandless plays a key role in the progression of the story. It is obvious as a major theme within Krakauer’s writing, considering about his repetition in terms of his comments and considerations among McCandless’s relationships, philosophy, anguish and response in the society. Krakauer shows various of scenes in McCandless’s life to show how he was peculiar in his attitude towards society.
Today, it seems that someone halfway across the world could have a say in how you feel, how you present yourself, the way you live with yourself, and this is presented to the extreme in this episode. It Was Never About the Map For many years now, extremist conspirators have believed that the world is going to end, and everyone will perish. However, one poet has a more positive outlook, “A Map to the Next World” by Joy Harjo illustrates the fall of man and the birth of a better world. Symbolism about ancient civilization, modern day society, and her hopes for the future in her poem are used to emphasize that humanity should work towards a restored future. Harjo keeps referring to a map in her poem, but a map was not meant for the creator of that map to use.
Tim Winton’s Distant Lands is a short story about the quest of the individual to reach fulfillment in their life. The book “Distant Lands” which appears within the story is a metaphor for the freedom and escape that the main character seeks in her life and is a central point from which all other important events in the book originate from. In the story characters are used to symbolize the possible outcomes that the main character could reach depending on what path her life takes. When the main character overcomes the obstacles of the negative characters by protecting “Distant lands”, the key to her freedom she completes her growth as a character and makes it certain that she will be able to achieve the fulfillment that she seeks.
