Viy: Spirit of Evil is a Soviet horror film from 1967. It was written by Konstantin Yershov and Georgi Kropachyov. The movie is based off of Nikolai Gogol’s Viy which is a horror novel or as Nikolai states a folk-lore. The movie starts with seminary students leaving for vacation.
In the novel, Something Wicked This Way Comes Mr. Dark is characterized as being manipulative, evil, and frantic. The novel reads, “Someone dear to you was down to the carousel… William Halloway. Where’s your mother tonight?” (Bradbury 217) This shows how Mr. Dark has a manipulative behavior towards Jim and Will by scaring them into making a noise so he can find him and steal their souls.

One example of Abigail's villainy is the scene where her cousin, Betty Parris yells about Abigail having drank blood in the forest. Archetypes Archetypes affect the reader, and most people who are chained to their book have just read over the words. They don’t realize the patterns the authors have placed within each text. Each character stands for something and it is universal pattern of human nature. Why does this affect the reader? Archetypes are relatable and link to many sought-after novels.
The setting of the movie in a classic suburban community around the 1950’s. The community aims for perfection in a way, that nothing odd is okay. That is why the mansion, where Edward Scissorhands has got residence, is a spot of dirt of the picture of perfection the community is trying to show. The color scheme makes the good versus evil theme very clear in the movie, in the way there is a clear contrast between good and evil. For example, the ‘good’ of the movie is shown, when we see the colors of the characters and the surrounding area.
I believe John Gardner wrote Grendel, not to make us sympathize for Grendel, but to help us understand why Grendel has this dark, pessimistic view of the world. John Gardner did an amazing job narrating a back story from the monstrous point of view of Grendel. There are many people who disagree and say John Gardner wrote Grendel to make the monster of Grendel seem more monstrous, and barbaric, but I feel these people are not fully digesting the text. In the novels, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Animal Farm by George Orwell, and Night by Elie Wiesel, authors reveal humanity’s true evils through literary devices such as characterization, psychology, and setting, to connect to the darkness that is present in the real world.
Both Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Christopher Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus display Mr. Hyde and Mephistophilis, respectively, as the devil archetype, as shown through Hyde’s selfish and wicked actions that lead to Jekyll’s death and Mephistophilis’s deceitful actions that lead to Faustus’s death. Hyde’s appearances as the devil figure emphasizes him as inhuman. When Utterson first meets Hyde, he describes him as “hardly human” with “Satan’s signature upon a face [Hyde]” (Stevenson 43). In this way Hyde’s physical appearance reflects the devil archetype as grotesque.
Humankind doesn't have any power or control over the actions we do throughout our daily lives. We are always under hypnosis where we think we do have power over the things we do but we don't. Yet we try to break free and try to gain power over what we do but it's a hard spell to break. So we create this hope or even a strong desire in our minds where we try to get control.

Time has still not changed sadly as we look out and still see what these feelings bring some of us to do to others. In Othello we first handly get to see the actions and plans that go into place to make something of this nature happen, but we never truly get to know why Iago decided he was done. Shakespeare makes sure of this when he ends on Iago being shipped away to be tortured until he answers for why he has done such evils (Act V, scene ii, line 3740) and this was meant to be done by Shakespeare. Shakespeare wanted the audience to come up with his or her own opinions on why a characters like Iago would risk everything
Evil is a simple word that we learn at a young age and that we understand is bad. However, our youth and innocence prevents us from knowing the weight the word holds. As our understanding of evil develops, we begin to see evil all around us. Although we hold common societal definitions of evil, each person is bound to view evil slightly different from others. Someone might consider alcoholism evil, while others consider it normal: someone might believe racism is evil, while others believe it is natural.
