Chicago’s architecture and design is very unique compared to many other cities. The Loop is where you can see the greatest innovation of transportation and urban planning in Chicago. Architectural design and technology also have a very strong presence in Chicago. Many of these innovations stem from many different reasons including the Chicago Fire and the rail system. The financial powers of the east coast chose Chicago to be the railway hub to the west coast. Chicago had many advantages over other cities that where under consideration. Chicago did not just have an expanding railway system but also its connection to the Great Lakes made it a prime choice. The opening of the Illinois and Michigan canal helped strengthen its water routs and its capabilities to move goods across the nation. The canal connected Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River which was already a great transportation water way in the country.
