The exploitation of women has been an ongoing issue around the world for many years. Being judged for sex appeal rather than the talent offered has been a consistent issue for women. The sexploitation of women has arrived in the sports industry in which female athletes are being critiqued more on style and body image rather than actual skill. As a result of this, added pressures and standards are impounded onto these women repeatedly in order to reach the conventional image of a female athlete. It is unacceptable that the hard work a female athlete puts herself through becomes belittled because physical appearance overpowers their effort. Alongside making an income off the sport participated in, both male and female athletes aim to obtain endorsements to build their name and add secondary sources of income. According to Gerald Flores, writer of the article ‘Can Female Athletes Win at Endorsements?’ “Although physical attractiveness is an important factor for any potential sports endorser, it counts more for women” (Flores, 2013). For male athletes, it is said to be easy to gain endorsements because of their wide range of talent. But for female athletes, their endorsements usually only come along with the body image that is being portrayed, and not the athletic talent they may have.
