The world has been making killers for years. Serial murderers are people who have killed at least two to three human beings at different times. The violent mistreatment or usage of a person or animal is referred to as abuse when discussing serial killers. The discussion of nature vs. nurture has been going on since at least the 1800s. The debate is arguing: are people born to be a certain way or does their life and how they are raised affect their outcome? A copious amount of research has been done but the debate is finally going to be resolved. Serial killers are predominantly made from traumatic environmental factors/events. Most murderers known today were victims of childhood abuse. Childhood abuse that has been experienced by serial killers …show more content…
Certain genes can predispose people to violence but that does not make them killers. From the article previously mentioned, “Are Serial Killers Born or Made?”, it states that, “On the other hand, a child susceptible to genetically determined violence does not necessarily, nor consistently, turn into a juvenile or adult criminal. Be that as it may, genetics, when paired with experiential factors, for example, violent encounters during youth, may cooperate to shape a person in a negative direction.” Not all criminals were genetically “made” to be violent and genetics on their own does not make a person a criminal. Evidence does show that people who go through trauma while having these genes do have a higher chance of having negative results. Even if genetics are involved or loss of function in the brain, that does not mean that person will become a killer. A composition, written by Steven Taylor, mentions the story of neuroscientist Jim Fallon. Jim Fallon was doing a study on serial killers and their brain patterns. He was 100% sure that killers were purely born and were destined to kill. On a different project about the vulnerability to Alzheimer's disease, he was looking at his own family’s brain scans when he stumbled across a brain that looked exactly like a serial killer's brain. Turns out, it was his own brain. Fallon ignored it …show more content…
Meaning that the child was born into addiction or into that disorder because of their parents. The article written by Burcak Unal, “Are Serial Killers Born or Made?”, reports that, “Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) profiler Jim Clemente, when talking about serial killers, has declared that ‘genetics loads the gun, their personality and psychology aim it, and their experiences pull the trigger’ (FBI, 2021). It is in all likelihood the case that a mix of genetic qualities and life experiences may expand an individual’s inclination to turn into a serial killer.” Children tend to copy their parents, especially when they are young and fragile. If the parents are bad examples, the children are more likely to follow. On the other hand, some disorders can be passed down from parent to child. The parents could realize this and teach their child how to handle it or how to get the proper help. The disorder does not make the killer, their experiences do. Most serial killers have some kind of a mental disorder. Getting help at the right age, or just at all, can make a world of a difference. The study written by Hasti Sabhani under the same name, “Are Serial Killers Born or Made?”, points out that, “In The Anatomy of Violence, criminologist Dr. Adrian Raine says that, 'Genetics and environment work together to encourage violent behavior.’
