Aretha Franklin’s Fight for Civil Rights Aretha Franklin was an African American singer and civil rights activist. Aretha Franklin used her music for good. Franklin used her talents during the Civil Rights Movement to fight for the rights of African Americans, women, and Native Americans. There is way more to Franklin than just her singing ability. Franklin traveled alongside Martin Luther King Jr during the Civil Rights Movement. She released the song “Respect,” which became an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement. She dealt with many challenges, but she never stopped singing. She used her talent for the good of the world and should be honored during Black History Month. Aretha Louise Franklin was born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee. Both of Franklin's parents were singers; her mother Barbara was a gospel singer and pianist; her father C.L. Franklin was a singer and minister of national influence. At the age of six her parents separated and she moved in with her father in Detroit, Michigan. Franklin was most popular throughout the sixties and seventies, and she released one of her most well-known songs “Respect.” She also did not just argue for African American rights, she argued for the rights of women and Native Americans. Franklin believed that the best way to use a gift is for the good of the world. She should be honored during Black history month because Franklin did what she could to fight for the Civil Rights Movement. Franklin lived a good life fighting for what she believed in. She later died on August 16, 2018, of pancreatic cancer. In conclusion, Aretha Franklin can be a great role model and should be remembered and
