Argument Against The Kony 2012 Social Media Campaign

At the start of this unit, I thought I was going to be against the Kony 2012 social media campaign and that it was not effective, mostly because I had not heard of it before. I began going through the course materials with the readings and they did not give me much of a reason to before it due to them discussing how bad the issue of child soldiers is around the world. To elaborate, one of the readings stated that in the media, “rarely do descriptive accounts of child soldiers adequately explain how they undergo fundamental changes in their identities and actions, from lives of relatively tranquility to the perpetration of wanton destruction and violence, often on defenceless civilians” (Denov & Maclure, 2007, p. 244-245). In order for the people to care, they have to know and the only way for them to know is to share Kony’s name by make him a household name which will make his crimes visible (Kony 2012, 2012). It is then when people’s awareness will turn into action. The media such as television and social media platforms were used to spread awareness of Kony’s actions in Uganda and the film itself, escalated it to even more viewers. To be honest, this film made me emotional a few different times throughout it, but that just shows how tragic and real the issue of child soldiers is. The film helped to give me hope that every individual's voice matters and can make a difference. For what we do or do not do right now will affect every generation to come and that the technology that has brought our planet together is allowing us to respond to the problems of our friends (Kony 2012, 2012).
