Nothing has quite inspired the world in the way TED Talks have managed to bring together large audiences from different cultural backgrounds and unite them in a common belief. Nathan Heller, within his article “Listen and Learn,” describes TED’s rise to power and explains the characteristics of what makes a Talk successful. According to Heller, TED is “a four-day conference” during which multiple speakers offer Ted Talks, which are, in his words, “a series of Internet lecture videos that has received more than eight hundred million views to date” (69). While considering TED’s overwhelming popularity, it becomes clear that not everyone has what it takes to give a successful Talk that properly follows the genre’s norms, norms that have undoubtedly proven to be successful in advancing TED’s positive reputation.
Even in a persistent vegetative state a person still has fundamental rights under the state and federal constitution to refuse or direct the withdrawal of death prolonging procedures. The hospital fear of removing the feeding tube is justified under most state laws. Only in a few states it has been legalized for physician-assisted suicide. That is they allow doctors to assists patients to end their lives if the patient are to ill to do it by themself. In other states, doctors who assist their dying patient end their life of excoriating pain and suffering could be charged with murder.
Successful public speakers tend to use the canons of rhetoric elements to craft their presentations in a way for their speeches to be more effective. The canons of rhetoric used in this presentation were intervention, arrangement, style, and delivery. Intervention is determining the goal of the presentation as well as the conducting research and providing facts to back the message. The arrangement of the presentation was well thought-out, the message was clear and concise from the beginning to conclusion. Style fit this presentation well and was arranged in a way to keep grasp the attention of the audience.
From 1848 to 1920, an outrageous span of 70 years, women fought for equal rights, to have their voices and opinions heard. Little by little women have gained rights they have so passionately fought for. In 1973, about 50 years after women became eligible to vote, and began to be taken more seriously, the case of Roe v Wade granted women to have one of the most impactful rights to date, to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. Now, it is safe to say that all women and perhaps most men would not want women to lose the rights they have today, especially because there have been many influential women around the world who have been given the chance to be impactful because of the rights they possess. If I were asked to get the attention of my peers for a speech, I would first consider my audience because I have different groups of people I consider peers. I would also take into consideration the topic of the speech and utilize an appropriate attention grabber. For example, if I am giving a motivational speech, I might use the word courage. I could either incorporate that word into a powerful quote or tell a story about how courage “changed my life” or why it is a “necessary virtue” on the path to success. I think the most important part, in addition to the attention grabber, is to keep the audience’s attention throughout the speech.

Emma Sulkowicz was allegedly raped as sophomore in college at Columbia university. She states that it started off as a consensual sexual encounter, but then she was anally raped. After eight months and hearing from two other girls that had been sexually assaulted by the same man, she went and filed a complaint with the university. The man that was accused was found “not responsible” by the school. This lead Emma to take matters into her own hands and she started the Mattress Performance which was where she would carry her fifty pound mattress with her wherever she went until the accused either left the school or was kicked out.
With almost half the nation divided among their views, abortion remains one of the most controversial topics in our society. Since Roe v. Wade, our views in society as well as following court cases have been progressing toward the woman’s right to choose. The precedent set by Roe v. Wade made the Supreme Court acknowledge that it cannot rule specifically when life begins and it also affirms that it is the woman’s right to have an abortion under the 14th Amendment. In the 1st Amendment, the Establishment Clause forbids the government from passing laws “which aid one religion, aid all religions, or prefer one religion over another”. Many Christian pro-lifers use their religious beliefs to dispute when life begins.

Transgender is the term used to describe an individual whose gender identity does not align with their sex assigned at birth. The documentary, “Growing up Trans”, is a sensitive clip to watch about young youths who attempt to navigate family, friends, gender, and the medical decisions they face at puberty. “Growing up Trans” focuses mainly on transitioned young youths. The transgender youth from the documentary links to many theories from chapter eight. Theories such as socialization, gender, sexuality, homophobia, transphobia, and microaggression are associated with “Growing up Trans”.
