March 10, 2015 Essay 1: Moving Idea Although many people throw the word dialogue around as if they know exactly what it means, it seems as though it is a misunderstood concept that is actually extremely difficult to grasp the full idea of. Many times it is mistaken for debate, when in reality it is just the opposite. Dialogue is a flow of ideas about a certain topic that can lead a group’s conversation in any which way. Those who participate in dialogue may in fact make an argument, although if this is the case they need to support their claim and be able to back it up. There is no wrong idea within dialogue, which makes it easier for one to respond to the utterance of another. If someone is not able to properly connect an idea back to the last person that spoke because they do not understand what was said said or misunderstand the concept altogether, the rest of the group is likely able to help explain what was previously meant. With dialogue, group members are able to take the mistake and make it into a learning experience. Just as attempting to play a piece of music that is at a greater ability level, having dialogue with people who have more wisdom is beneficial because it creates a challenge and helps to develop skills. Although many believe that it is difficult to be an individual within a group setting, similarly to jazz solos, dialogue allows one to use the subjects in which they are knowledgeable about in order to better enhance the group. Ultimately, being in the moment during dialogue is what will make the flow of the group best and further them along in their dialogic
