According to Matt MCmillen, about one in five Americans drink diet sodas everyday. Many people think diet soda is healthier, that’s why it is called diet right? Well this is not true. While many believe that diet soda is a healthy alternative, diet soda can be just as unhealthy as regular soda can be for many different reasons. Instead of using sugar, diet soda uses artificial substitutes such as aspartame. It is almost 200 times sweeter than regular sugar is. It can cause some cancers and phenylketonuria. Because of this diet soda promotes weight gain, tooth decay and can cause many other health issues. Without a doubt, people know that gaining weight will happen when one drinks soda. But, what most people don’t know is that diet soda is not actually healthier than regular soda. One can averages around 150 calories and contains around 10 teaspoons of sugar. When people take in more calories than can be used, it gets stored as fat.
