My argumentative essay is over how Merlin changed throughout the story. Some will argue he didn’t and I’m going to argue he did. Merlin Tornhout was eighteen years old and a member of the Klu Klux Klan or the KKK. He felt it was very important to prove himself to the KKK. Merlin was a very racist man and was very rude. Towards the beginning of the story Merlin bullied younger children. He would stomp on their sand castle’s. He then threatened Lanora and her father. Merlin told Lanora that he was going to burn them both on the cross. Then towards the end of the story the KKK ordered the he go poison Lanora and her father’s well. In the middle of the story a little white, Jewish girl was standing on the railroad tracks. Merlin just stood there and watched her. He thought he could probably save her or do something to save her but he didn’t. Lanora then came running and pushed her off the tracks. Merlin was surprised that Lanora was so fast. The KKK was not too happy with Merlin because they knew he had the keys to the newspaper office. So a while later the KKK told Merlin he had to go poison the well of Lanora and her father. Merlin went to the well and decided he wasn’t going to poison it. He wanted to be a better person. The same night Merlin went to go poison the well the Hershe’s house was shot at.
