Do pennies have any value? Generally, pennies are known as small copper coins that many people get as change and most likely ignore. Although many people feel that pennies may change the world, others would disagree. It is clear that penny production should still occur because they can be donated, bringing out the kindness in people, they have encouraged a large amount of our culture, and they can help round prices of items, which makes paying a lot easier.
Pennies are small, however when they are donated, they can make an enormous difference. In the passage the author suggests, “The history of a penny reveals more than just a coin-it exposes a piece of American culture. The one-cent piece has influenced our language, giving us a number of idioms, such as “a penny for your thoughts” and “not one red cent” The coin also gave rise to the terms like “penny candy” (candy sold for a cent) and “penny arcade” (an amusement center with machines that cost one cent to operate)” (Story, para.4). Based on the evidence, pennies have given the country interesting ways of saying basic things. It has influenced the way we talk and since it has been around for so long, there are more and more sayings involving the penny. Also, the images on the penny have changed over and over giving everyone something new to look at. For example, in the text the author suggests, “The first pennies, minted until 1857, were very large-larger than our modern-day quarter and had different images of the Statue of Liberty on the front. Several other versions of the coin were minted before finally producing the familiar Lincoln penny in 1909. Since then, ten varieties have been minted, mostly because of the changes in metal content” (Story, para 2).
