Argumentative Essay: Banned Books

Many books are being banned, censored and challenged daily. When these books are banned it is sometimes not always a good thing. Many students and authors are getting their rights taken away, students are losing opportunities to learn and authors' freedom of speech is being violated. As a result, books should not be banned because of bias, students’ freedom, and parents rights. Books should not be censored from only one person's opinions and views because it restricts access to people who want to read it. In the book, Banned Books Literature Suppressed by Sexual Grounds, it states that “Judge Goldman ruled that The Chinese Room was not obscene and authorized an injunction against the prosecutors interference with the sale of the book” (Sova, …show more content…

However, those people are wrong because parents rights and parental monitoring can be a fix to this problem. In the book, Censorship, it states that “Books written by black, chicano, and homosexual authors represented on its pages; these books are frequently the targets of campaigns by parents and right wing groups which claim these books are unfit to be read and taught to children in schools” (Current Controversies, 2001, p.63). It is good that parents want to protect their children and they have the right to do so but, because they take away books many students can relate to the authors and believe it is unfit, the students may feel like outcast themselves. The book, Censorship, also states that “Choices to use some books and reject others are made constantly, and parents are doing nothing wrong in trying to influence those choices” (Current Controversies, 2001, p.63). Parents are trying to do good when they ban books, but are also taking books away from other people too. If something is really a problem, parents should individually monitor what their child is reading themselves.
