Distracted driving. What do people think when they hear that? Most would say texting, but is it true? Distracted driving is anything that takes people's eyes or mind off of there driving task (“Arm Yourself with the facts.”) and (Benton). Yes, the drivers mind too, meaning anyone's music, other humans or pet, conversations, thinking, stress, etc. The list could go on and on. So texting is NOT the only distraction. Being distracted while driving can hurt others and lead to not being on task. As parents and teachers, we need to be educating students about speeding, the use of drugs, alcohol, and distracted driving. At 65 mph, that is crossing an entire football field with eyes closed (Grohol). Just think about what damage “you can do in that distance, to people and other drivers, if suddenly confronted with unexpected brake lights in front of you” (Grohol). That's why most people think distracted driving is texting and driving. Responding to those texts is even more dangerous. Most teens, and sometimes even adults, claim to be ‘addicted’ to their phone or have to respond right away. Now, if people feel like they need to respond or are ‘addicted’, pull over to the side of the road and respond to it. CBS News did a survey for motorist and points out “6 percent answered that they are ‘addicted to texting’.” (Why so Many People Text and Drive, Knowing Dangers). Pulling over to the side of the road would be a lot safer than reading a text while driving. There are 391,000 crashes that lead to injuries (A Simple Solution For Distracted Driving) Let’s talk about Airplane Pilots for a few minutes. If they are distracted while flying the plane, they won’t look in front of them to see if there is another plane in front of them. Pilots have to take extra caution because they are flying a big plane and they have a lot of people on board. They can’t afford to crash that plane and kill/injure all those people. Their phones should be shut off or put away. They don’t need to be looking, just like we should not look at our phones when we drive. People can keep others
