Genetic Testing and Cancer When I was only one, I was diagnosed with an adult form of Leukemia. This cancer is an aggressive blood cancer that took over blood cells in my body causing me to be deathly ill. I spent the next two years in the hospital taking experimental drugs supposed to treat me. After many unsuccessful tries, none of the drugs seemed to have improved my condition. My parents were desperate to try anything. At the time blood cancer had only a 40% survival rate with chemo. Out of options, they turned to genetic testing which was still considered an unproven method at the time. They started the process of finding a match by going through a program that helps find donors all over the world but unfortunately the process takes months. They started by drawing blood from my mom, dad and brother. The results came back negative for any of them as a match. Out of options, we turned to another group that searched internationally for a match. They waited for a week to receive news that they found a match for a donor; it was a girl the same age I was in Barcelona, Spain. The blood was transfused and ended up saving my life.
