The penny has been a part of American currency since her early days and, for the most part, is used in most Americans everyday lives. This piece of copper plays a vital role in today's marketing, but how necessary is it? Most people don't bother to pick up a penny on the ground because it has close to no value. Unless, you're the type of person who saves their pennies for years and years until they finally have enough change to buy a lousy chocolate bar. The penny is an unnecessary piece of American currency and would benefit the people as a whole if it were discontinued. Jim Kolbe presented a reasonable argument when he presented legislation to congress to eliminate the penny. America's marketing systems take advantage of the use of the penny when they set prices for items at $59.99. Although this may look more appealing than $60, it would make life so much easier to round the price to $60 and not get pennies involved. The countless number of pennies go into your purse and take up room while causing your wallet to become quite heavier. Far too often do people dumb pennies out of their wallets or change purses and put them in a jar to never be touched again. “Quarters and dimes circulate; pennies disappear because they are literally more trouble than they are worth.” (Source C) Most pennies never circulate because they are either lying at the bottom of purses, lost behind couch cushions, or saved up somewhere in a jar. Even if you save up your pennies for years upon years, the most you will be able to purchase is a candy bar or maybe even a coke. No longer do we have penny candy due to Americas constantly changing economy.
