The U.S is one of the biggest advocates for gun rights and also the world leading country for gun ownership. Most recent data shows that we hold first place for country with the most guns per capita at 88.8 per 100 persons.(cbcnews.com) You would think that a country that supports gun ownership that much would allow for them to be carried everywhere with certain exceptions. Our right to keep a gun is protected by the second amendment, which says “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” One of the most controversial topics regarding guns is weather or not we should be allowed to carry them on school buildings.
Gun Rights in America The Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights grants Americans the right to bear arms. Opinions of this vary, but I believe the safety of ourselves and posterity are above all. Criminals throughout the US take advantage of this privilege and use weapons for violence and evil purposes that should be unspeakable to our world, such as murder, robbery, and torture. Owning rifles or pistols ourselves is the only way to counter these treacheries.
Not all educators understand the basics of gun safety. Without this proper knowledge, many people can get severely injured or put others in harm. If all teachers wanted to carry a gun, they would go through a lot of classes and it would cost a lot of money. Over the past few weeks, arming teachers has been a controversial topic throughout the country. School shootings have taken the lives of many over the past few years, yet they are becoming more and more frequent. In today’s society children shouldn’t have to go to school worried if they are going to be safe that day. If teachers are armed it will add that extra bit of protection to the children. A big question is if arming teachers is even going to matter if an active shooter happens to be in that school.
Firstly, the arming of students, faculty and staff should be prohibited because its unsafe. The debate on whether staff, faculty and students should carry firearms on campuses has been going for years now. Some colleges have debated that a law should be passed were staff and faculty should carry firearms on campus, but other colleges have dismissed this case because it is dangerous and unsafe. According to Jesus Villahermosa’s essay “Guns don’t belong in the Hands of Administrators, Professors, or Students” he states, “I agree that allowing guns on campuses will create problems, not solve them.” This statement is true because not everyone is capable to handle a gun or even use one.
In 2011, 10.3 in every 100,000 people in the U.S. were victims of gun related deaths. If the teacher would have had a gun then he/she could have shot the attacker. Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
Gun control has been a heated debate for several decades, recently, the discussion surrounding this matter has intensified. The argument seems to be divided into liberal and conservative views, thoughts, and values. A majority of liberals desire stricter gun laws, required mental health check-ups, and longer waiting periods when it comes to purchasing a gun. However, the general census among the Republicans is less governmental interference because they feel that there is already too much governmental control involved. The Republican Party often does not want stricter gun laws because the problem at hand is not the gun itself, but the individual wielding the gun.
Guns have no role in our country schools. Schools and colleges are places of education. Students should be free to learn in an environment away from every day violence. The catastrophes that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Columbine High School, and Virginia Tech. confirm the penetrating conclusion guns have in our nation’s schools. Violence on campus has Students, Parent, and University Staff all concerned and looking for preventative measures.
Should children be taught gun safety? An instructor at an Arizona shooting range was teaching a nine year old how to shoot a fully automatic uzi and the kid lost control of the gun and accidently shot the instructor. Gun accidents like this shouldn’t happen. First, a nine year old kid should not start learning how to shoot a gun of that caliber. Once the trigger is pulled with that type of gun, the gun shoots a lot of rounds a second and it is hard to control.
Looking at the issue of gun rights, I am a firm believer that this right should strictly be a state issue. There are various factors that can play a great role in the culture of each state. Things such as population density, geography, morality, childhood, political status, and religion impact states and the way they function. If each state shared the same law related to gun rights, it would ultimately defeat the goal of allowing each state to create laws based on their culture, and would most likely become a federal law, limiting the right of some. Being born and raised in Wyoming, I see no issues with all citizens having the right to bear arms.

Proponents argue that, if the government strictly controls the ownership of guns, such tragedies can be prevented. Most Americans have an obsession with guns because the law allows them to do so. Therefore, they are always ready to scoff at anyone trying to control gun ownership.
