Abortion in America
Abortion is one of the most controversial topics in America and has been for many years. Abortion is the deliberate termination of human pregnancy, but the biggest question is whether or not abortion is murder. The debate on legalizing abortion continues to divide Americans despite the Supreme Court ruling in 1973 that said that abortion is a “fundamental right.” Those on the pro-choice side claim that the rights of the mother outweigh the rights of the embryo or fetus and should not be limited by governmental or religious authority. Those on the pro-life side claim that from the point of fertilization, human life begins, so is therefore taking the life of an innocent human being. Abortion is morally wrong; therefore, to reduce the demand for it, people need education about and access to effective contraception.
Abortion is unlike any debate today because of the emotional pain and loss needed to justify what is being done. Throughout the years, great numbers of women have come forward to express how their abortion negatively affected their lives. The feelings of desperation, abandonment, and guilt associated with abortion have left mothers unable to cope with the aftermath of their decision. While pro-choice feminists claim that abortion is an act of empowerment for women, mothers who have had abortions claim otherwise.
