Make-up, fragrances, cleaning supplies, medicine, body wash: these are all items that can be bought at almost any store in the United States. Many big companies test these products on animals to identify the quality and their effectiveness. Animals should not be used for experimentations because they are living being, just like us. Not only is this practice cruel and inhumane, it is not accurate for animals to be tested on because their bodies are so different from human bodies while there are alternative methods available. Animals are genetically different from humans anatomically, metabolically, and cellularity (Biomedical Research, 2007). While people on the supporting side believe that animals are good test subjects because of similiarit, their only animal they argue is the chimpanzee. Neurologist Aysha Akhtar states, “The main reason for these high failure rates? Animal experiments simply don't make good "models" of human physiology and human diseases.” She then explains that over 85 HIV vaccines failed in the human body after working well in the bodies of non-human primates (Akhtar, 2013). Not only are these tests not as accurate, they also cost more. The Humane Society International compared different types of animal tests to each other to compare costs. A “rat uterotrophic assay” cost $29,600 but the in vitro test only costs $7,200. Costs can range from $2 million to $4 million for a two-species lifetime cancer investigation (Costs of Animal and Non-Animal Testing, 2007). Companies waste money on these studies when there are method they could use that would protect the animals and save money. The National Institutes of Health has a budget of $31 billion and $14 billion of this money went to animal research (Budget, 2015). Leaders of such programs believe that without the research on animals, one would not be able to find the issues with the product. Many of these tests performed on animals are flawed.
