In the age of the internet, information is freely distributed therefore banning books serves no purpose. Books are generally banned because they present new, controversial ideas. However banning books does not allow the public to form their own judgement. If we continue to allow school boards, and parents to ban books we will be doing a disservice to the next generation, and minimising their awareness of alternative perspectives. There will be no progress in society as the prevailing view of current times is not always necessarily correct, which has been proven by science. Galileo Galilei, a famous scientist believed the earth went around the sun and was persecuted by the religious authorities for publishing his opinion and shamed him for printing views which was against the view of the times. The prevailing view was that the sun went around the earth. As we know today, Galileo was correct which not only proves if you ban ideas you ban progress. Mankind does not live only to survive. The citizens of America do not have the right to restrict public access to certain texts as it is an infringement of personal rights, and is in direct violation of the First Amendment. Restricting freedom of speech and freedom of the press is destructive to society, and will turn America into a Fascist state. Banning books restricts freedom of speech which is detrimental to society’s progress as it is a fundamental human right, and to take this right away from the people will have the most catastrophic consequences.
