Death is something we are all faced with sooner or later in life. When this time comes for some of us there are dreams we had in life that maybe we never got to achieve. To accomplish these dreams some people make bucket lists. Bucket lists are lists of a number of things we had hoped to do in life before we die. In my opinion I would definitely NOT recommend a bucket list to a terminally ill patient.
First off, bucket list can show that the patient is not actually accepting their death. A patient making this list could just be doing it to pass the time. They could even be looking for something to brighten their spirits or generate some energy. In an article I read on this subject , psychotherapist Philippa Perry and psychologist Linda Blair ,express all these same ideas. Linda Blair states “ It 's a way of denying the idea of death, not coping with is at all…”. She also said it can be a way of them preventing to think about death.
Next, bucket list can also be not obtainable or possible for a patient in critical care. With a patient unable to do all of these outrageous things, it could get their hopes up and can lead to them being even more depressed then they may already be. On one occasion a 17 year old girl named Emma, who had had bone cancer since she was 12, was taken off treatment because it was doing more harm than good.
