At the time, cancer was a death sentence once diagnosed with it, there was no such thing as a treatment at that point in time. As the large cancer epidem spread and intensified was when the miracle happened, “There was a real sense of excitement that perhaps a drug could cure patients with cancer” (A History of Chemotherapy, DeVita VT). The article of their findings was published well after their discovery even took place due to the chemical warfare laws and the secreecy the government pleaded to obtain. A new found hope became for the people who already had lost so many loved ones, or was dealing with cancer itself. Now a days when people are diagnosed with cancer, their treatment options are wide in selection and the prognosis has only been improving every year due to the advances that are constantly being made. A 2016 report states, “{...} there was an estimated 1,685,210 cancer cases between males and females of all ages, only 595,690 died” (Cancer Facts & Figures 2016, American Cancer Society). Although 595,690 seems like a huge number, it is but between all of those females and males of all ages, different cancers, different stages, etc.., 1,089,520 were saved due to chemotherapy being used to treat their cancer. Cancer is a fatal disease even when caught early, without the use of Chemo, of the 1,685,210 cases reported, most would have died. As of January 2017, “The number of cancer survivors is projected too grow to 26.1 million by 2040, an increase of 11 million since 2016” (Statistics, National Cancer Institute). A report from January 2017 stated that cancer reports have increased but along with that cure have also increased significantly.
