When you think about affirmative action, the thought of unfair job placement might be expected. As the general thought, it is accompanied by the claims from Professor Sterba. She gives insight on how there are different stances on affirmative action, yet there are similarities in these stances in the form of diversity and social climate. Unorthodox as it may seem, diversity can be seen to promote the idea of affirmative action to give a broader spectrum of qualified individuals. On the other hand, diversity is probably the reason some feel that job placement is unfair because it is not on merit. In terms of social climate, it is bad either way to have affirmative action because the African-American employee will either be the token black guy at work or a part of the group that is suspected to be here only because of your race.
