Driverless cars used to be a dream from the movies. Nowadays, this far-fetched idea is starting to become a reality. However, as new innovations are released, customers must be aware of the dangers and perks of autonomous vehicles. As these issues come up and arguments are made, potential consumers must be in the know when it comes to this highly debated matter.
One main argument in favor of driverless cars is that “‘there’s dramatic potential to reduce crashes by 80 to 90 percent, even more,” (Source 2). With thousands of vehicle accidents yearly, having a way to reduce crashes is desirable for drivers. However, this is not the only argument for the widespread use of driverless vehicles, consumers should also be aware that “a robot car… is able to perform many calculations before we’re even aware of danger” (Source 1). Since automated cars can continuously scan for safety threats, it makes it even safer than the average car. This will be extremely helpful in preventing incidents while driving. Despite these positives, there are some negatives customers should be aware of before buying a autonomous car.

It is important for customers to know that robot cars can be dangerous because “even if the harm is unintended, some crash-optimization algorithms for robot cars would seem to require the deliberate and systematic discrimination” (Source 1). This would lead the driverless car industry, and customers, down a morally dangerous path. Another negative to be aware of is the potential for hackers since “enabling cars to connect to wireless networks could put them in danger” (Source 2). The thought of someone having the ability to hack into a car is scary, and this is a risk customers must be aware of. Along with these risks, lawmakers are also are facing
