100 years ago, the demand for electric cars were higher than gas powered cars, but as gas powered engine cars became cheaper, the demands for electric cars rapidly died. However, the flaws of gas cars started to rise to the surface: smog, high rates of respiratory system problems, CO2 emissions, and global warming. After General Motors(GM) won the World Solar Challenge, the Californian Air Resources Board(CARB) saw this as the solution to their “worst air quality in America” problem and passed the Zero Emission Vehicle(ZEV) Mandate. In comply to this mandate, General Motors designed an idea of a “battery electric vehicle” called the EV1. It brought California to see hope in solving emission problems from the enormous amount of carbon dioxide of cars. Not only was it eco-friendly, but it was also fast, quiet, and did not require gas: it was loved by diverse people around town. However, the EV1 holds a lot of controversy since it was removed from the streets faster than it was built. The losses in manufacturing an electric car and the negative impacts on the traditional car industry was too definite.
