Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that has a negative impact on a normal life. It is a neurological disorder that could affect all people, irrespective of age, and finding solutions that are effective and with fewer adverse effects is the interest of many pharmacologists. This problem exists in the United States among adults, but due to the fact that there are a great number of pharmacological companies, there is more chance to develop better medicine. To be more specific, this essay is going to evaluate some solutions for epilepsy, which are antiepileptic drugs and the ketogenic diet. To start with, diet has an important influence in diminishing epileptic seizures. For example, Lambrechts et al’s research found that “50% of patients had a reduction of the frequency of seizures” over a 12-week course of the dietary treatment (2012, 311). Also, KD has a positive effect on the psychological state, vigilance, and alertness (Schoeler et al, 2014, 78). For instance, improvements in mood, arousal and alertness accounted for 24%, 60% and 15.7% patients respectively (Lambrechts et al, 2012, 312). However, there are frequent occasions of negative side effects, such as the weight loss and gastrointestinal problems (Nei et al, 2014, 439). Unfortunately, the ketogenic diet has some strong effects as an antiepileptic drug. First, losing weight is a serious disadvantage of this diet. For example, 60% patients in Lambrechts et al’s research experienced this difficulty (2012, 312). Second, gastroenteric issues are the common side effect of the ketogenic diet (Lambrechts et al, 2012, 310).
