The experience machine is an intricate object that can create any experiences we want and make them seem reality. This in theory sounds like a dream come true, not having to deal with the stresses and hardships of real life while only experiencing the things you want for the rest of your life. How could anyone be against this form of heavenly release from the misery of reality? I, however, would never use the experience machine even if someone paid me a million dollars to use it. Of course, you can try to select an experience for the experience machine with the same friend that you made in the previous experience venture, but many questions unfold. Would this “friend” remember you from the previous venture? If not, would you have to make it very specific when selecting the experience for the experience machine? But even if we assume that the “friend” from the previous experience venture remembers you, this so-called “friendship” is as spurious as dreams we have in our sleep. It just cannot be recreated unless you make it reality. To make it real, you have to decide to stop using the experience machine and go out to the actual world. The final reason I would not use an experience machine is because I would end up neglecting and eventually forgetting my family.
