Many debates regarding homosexual relationships create controversial ideas in the United States. Some argue that same-sex couples should not have the same rights as opposite-sex couples. Meanwhile, many conclude that there should be laws and policies to protect gay rights. Policies passed to protect gay rights allow homosexual couples to adopt children as mentioned in Michael J. Ritter’s article, “Adoption by Same-Sex Couples: Public Policy Issues in Texas Law & Practice”, which explores equal adoption processes for all couples, including same-sex couples. This concept of equality for all is also portrayed in the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson who argues that all citizens of America are equal. In The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Michael Pollan’s argument that all people should be cautious of processed food and eat healthier diets indicates that honest foods, or foods that can traced to its origin, allow all people to live honest and healthy lives. Pollan takes families and other individuals into an organic farm where all meats and vegetables are healthier. He interviews them and records their comments on the fresh foods. After tasting the food, they respond with, “‘I just don’t trust the meat in the supermarket anymore.’ ‘You’re not going to find fresher chickens anywhere’” (Pollan). Since these people are able to savor fresh meats at an organic farm, they “don’t trust [other] meat” in local supermarkets because they are “not going to find fresher” food anywhere else besides an organic farm. By understanding that eating fresh foods and understanding where foods from supermarkets originate from, people are able to eat a healthy, honest diet. Therefore, spreading this information about organic foods allows all individuals to eat fresh meat or vegetables rather than processed foods from supermarkets. People will learn to look carefully at labels when grocery shopping and live honestly knowing what goes into their bodies. Therefore, this demonstrates that American policies create honest lives for all individuals because people will be aware where their food comes
