The Second Amendment to the US Constitution is necessary. People should have the right to keep and bear arms to protect themselves. However, to protect the masses of innocent people from gun violence, gun control needs to be improved. The Second Amendment gives Americans the right to have firearms for the purposes security. Unfortunately, this liberty can result in a violation of security, as a gun in the wrong hands leads to tragedy. The US has already suffered numerous terrible incidences of gun violence such as the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting of December 2012 and the Aurora Theater shooting of July 2012. In 2010, guns took the lives of 31,076 Americans via homicides, suicides, and unintentional shootings (National Center for Injury Prevention, 2012). Transactions between individuals who do not have a Federal Firearms License (FFL) should be prohibited. Even though this would make it more difficult for criminals to get guns via authorized dealers, they could still easily buy guns in other ways. For example, currently people can buy guns from gun shows without showing any form of identification, and according to the 2004 U.S. Justice Department’s Survey of State Inmates in State Correctional Facilities, nearly 40% of the 1,400 respondents said they got their guns from friends or relatives, while about 38% said they got them from the secondary market (Jones, Peterson 2013). These types of trades should be strictly punished, and the firearms that are traded out of regulation should be confiscated. This will help regulate criminal access to firearms. In Australia, the number of homicides decreased after the Firearms Act of 1973 that included mandatory gun registration and cleaning up of illegal guns. These measures would not only decrease gun related crime, but also increase tax revenue, as guns sold on the black-market are not
