Many United States citizens own guns for self-defense, for commercial use, or for sport. Yet, guns have also been used in homicides, suicides, and mass shootings in a countless number of countries, including the United States of America. According to a recent report, in 2015 there were more than 36,000 gun-related deaths in the United States with two thirds being suicides and one third homicides (Smith 8). Attempting to combat the issue of loose regulations, New York, Rhode Island, California, and a few other states have implemented strict gun laws resulting in the lowest percentage of gun owners. While difficult to implement, gun control regulations need be tightened in order to battle this rapidly growing issue. Perhaps the strongest argument, a tighter regulatory approach on gun control would decrease the number of deaths, raising the magnitude of safety in our nation. While gun control is a set of policies that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms by civilians, the United States government has kept very loose policy regulations due to federal law. These loose regulations have caused a plethoric amount of casualties throughout the states. There were 464,033 total gun deaths between 1999 and 2013: 270,237 suicides (58.2% of total deaths); 174,773 homicides (37.7%); and 9,983 unintentional deaths (2.2%) (“Should more gun control laws be enacted” 2017).
