In the wake of all the news going around about the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, the topic of gun control related to mental health has come about. Recently, on February 14, 2018, a former student of the school, Nikolas Cruz, opened fire on the students as they were filing out of the school during a fake fire drill. Cruz is presumed to have had some type of mental illness. This event, along with the other major mass shooting events across America, could possibly have been avoided if the Congress made access to mental health facilities more readily available throughout America. Many people believe that people who suffer from mental illnesses are the main reason such violent and devastating events like mass shootings happen. This …show more content…

There also needs to be more health care facilities, school counselors, and school psychologists in our communities to help with this problem. As stated by Hickey, is true that most of the mass shootings that are headlined in the news are committed by people who suffer from mental illness (Hickey 12.) However, as Congress tackles the issue of gun violence in the United States in connection to mental illness, they need to keep in mind that ninety-six percent of all crimes are committed by people who do not suffer from a mental illness (Hickey 12.) There is not one simple solution to the mass shootings that are going on in our community, but there are little changes that we can make that can make a big difference in our community. For example, making mental health care more readily available to the community. Also, hiring more school psychologists that can actually help students with their mental health; this also provides students with somebody who understands them and they trust. It is time to stop targeting people with mental health issues and start providing better support systems for them
