The Hiroshima bombing: an event that had a drastic impact on our history, and an event that becomes an even more debatable topic as the years go by. In the book Hiroshima by John Hersey, Hersey writes about the survivors of the atomic bomb that landed in Hiroshima and creates a comprehensive picture of the destruction. Throughout the story, Hersey, due to his empathetic way of writing, wrote in the perspective of all the main characters and was able to convey all of their feelings accurately. However, Hersey’s position on the topic of whether America should have dropped atomic bombs or not is not directly portrayed, but can be seen through his writing that he was against it. On the other hand, I strongly believe that the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings were both very tragic events, but it was a choice that had to be made. Furthermore, the amount of deaths that could have happened, the fate of WW2, and the declarations of surrender that America gave Japan, all support my position on why these nuclear bombings were necessary.
