Surgeons are now becoming more prone to using hypnosis to put their patients to sleep rather than the alternative of putting them on drugs or medication. Before having a major surgery, the doctor always tells the patient that they cannot eat anything about 24 hours before the surgery; but what happens if they do? One very common solution to this is the use of hypnosis to put the patient in the trance in order to perform the procedure. This takes away the need for an empty stomach for the drugs they put patients on. Radiologist Elvira Lang says, “Your body has to be here, but you don’t” (Abrams and Winters). In 1961, psychiatrist Ralph August conducted a study of these effects and found that after being hypnotized only 4% of the women needed additional painkillers. His study also showed that these hypnotized patients could resist intense pain for a full minute longer than those not hypnotized. This was also compared to the subjects that were put on a placebo painkiller; those who had hypnosis could withstand the pain for 30 additional seconds (Abrams and Winters). This use of hypnosis can be used for all sorts of medical procedures, including vascular or kidney surgery.
