“Maybe, he said hesitantly, maybe there is a beast...Maybe it's only us”(125-126). After reading the novel Lord of the Flies, a group of boys crash onto an island and learn to survive but do not have the strength to agree and compromise. There is too much disagreement between the boys. Most of the boys are set in their own specific way and refuse to believe that they are wrong or there are better suggestions on making the island a better place. Unfortunately, they can not agree on one idea peacefully, which ends up creating chaos. William Golding uses his novel to explain the certain faults and weaknesses of society and humankind using symbolism through the characters. Most characters at the end of the novel become the beast. In the novel it states “There isn’t anyone to help you”. Only for me. And I’m the Beast. . . . Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill? . . . You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you, right? Close, close, close, close! I’m the reason why it’s no go. Why are things the way they are?”(pg 206). This shows that the beast is within society. Simon is the only character that notices that the boys on the island are the problem. Golding sees moral behavior, in many cases, as something that civilization forces upon the individual rather than a natural expression of human individuality. When left to their own devices, Golding implies, people naturally revert to cruelty, savagery, and barbarism. This idea of innate human evil is central to Lord of the Flies, and finds expression in several important symbols, most notably the beast and the pigs head on the stick.
