Over time, the morals of humans have shifted from excitement over pure violence and bloodshed into strict requirements of order and civilization. Some say that that old, evil desire of mankind is still present within us today, even if it takes layers upon layers to reveal. William Golding, the author of the Lord of the Flies lived in a time when there was man-made violence all around him– World War 2. As he identified all that was happening around him, he came to the conclusion that humans are born defective at birth and it is within their nature to desire destruction above all else. Another piece of literature, or film, in this case, that depicts the instinct of human survival, is The Hunger Games. The story tells of a world in which twenty-four candidates from a country are sent out each year to be placed in an arena where they battle to the death for the entertainment of the country’s higher class and to show the lower class that the government is superior in power. It follows a girl, Katniss Everdeen, who is selected to be a tribute, and in the arena, she learns of what it means to survive among many of the tributes there. These two fictions are prime examples of what human nature really is– and that it is not something natural but rather something that you learn to become. Not everyone will react the same in the same situation and their reaction can only be based on their senses– in other words, their own nature that they unconsciously built themselves. In the Hunger Games, there is a clear difference among the districts with Districts 1 and 2 being trained to fight and survive in the Hunger Games, called Careers, while the upper districts are only raised to work and fear being chosen as tribute in the Games. From the beginning of the Games, the tributes from Districts 1 and 2, notably Glimmer, Cato, and Clove were violent towards everyone from the beginning, killing everyone at first sight. The only reason why the four tributes reacted to everything brutally was because they were the only tributes to grow up in the most battle-hungry districts. They were even happy to kill everyone else in the arena while the other tributes only did what they did to survive– the desire to kill others and test their strengths lies in the ideas they learned from being a Career. The difference in the instinct between the luxurious districts and poorer districts is easy to see upon comparing the tributes. One instance of this is when the Games begin and everyone rushes around to either grab materials, kill others, or run far from the crowd. Katniss chooses to run
