As citizens of the United States, media constantly impacts our daily lives. Reliable information and evidence from media sources is needed in order for citizens to form their opinions in a democracy. In today’s world, bias is subtly threaded in many media news sources. Bias is prejudice in favor of one subject compared with another. With hinted bias in media, people need to understand why each story is written the way it is because each media source is written in a different context and tone. With critical thinking and analyzing, this bias can be determined. For example, after the Texas shooting on the morning of November fifth, (as mentioned earlier) Vox released a gun violence article later that day at 4:10 pm. The article talked about how America has the highest levels of gun violence in the world and there needs to be policies passed to reduce gun access. This suggests a left bias, trying to target American readers who heard of the Texas massacre and are now looking for solutions and proposals to prevent a similar gun-related tragedy from happening again by reducing gun ownership. This could even form more partisan views in America, as conservatives would see the article as a more anti-guns view and argue against the liberals who would strongly support the article. Vox also released another gun violence article the morning after the Texas shooting. The headline was “Austrailia confiscated 650,000 guns. Murders and suicides plummeted.” The timing of the release of the article was to influence viewers with the bias that confiscation of guns is a positive action for the United States because it was a solution in Australia. The Texas tragedy had just occurred due to gun violence, so the release of this article could affect opinions of gun ownership among readers.
