Have you ever heard of the New England Patriots? I’m sure you have and I’m sure you know that they are good but do you know the key to their success? Well unfortunately it’s cheating. THe Patriots have been playing unfairly in the NFL for years. They have deflated footballs, spied on practices, and gone against many rules in the league. Sadly these things got them where they are today.
The first and maybe worst scandal was spygate. This was when the Patriots illegally videotaped their opponents practices. In Super Bowl XXXIX the Patriots faced the Philadelphia Eagles and knew all of their plays which lead them to win a close game 24-21. However there was a reason for this victory. The Patriots sent disguised media members to the Eagles practices to find out and videotape their plays. Then later they faced their division rivals the New York Jets and on spied on their coach’s signals from an unauthorized location. They also went on to win this game in a 38-14 blowout. This was the deflategate. Footballs are easier to hold and catch when lighter and deflated so the Patriots took advantage of that and did so illegally. It happened in a cold and wet AFC Championship game where they faced the Indianapolis Colts. Several Indianapolis players reported that the balls felt weird and deflated. Patriots QB Tom Brady sent text messages to the ball boy saying to deflate the footballs and he did so. On top of that New England head coach Bill Belichick and the rest of the team knew and didn’t care. Later though Brady would serve a four game suspension for this scandal. Unfortunately the Patriots would beat the Colts in this game 45-7 and would go on to win Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks 28-24 because of this
