Pitbulls: Family Dogs Pitbulls have the unfair reputation of being aggressive, unfriendly dogs. People think that this breed, and any mix that might have pit in them, are violent and harmful by nature. While pitbulls do have some hunter instincts and are built for battle, their countenance and demeanor depends largely on how they are raised, just like any other dog. Most pitbulls are naturally built bigger, stronger, and with more capability of causing harm; therefore, they are instantly seen as a scary, dangerous dog. This preconception, with proper training, could not be further from the truth. Although pitbulls are built with large bodies and strong jaws, they are not born with, nor have natural killer instincts. News sites run more stories about pitbulls harming and attacking helpless people for “no reason” more than stories about these dogs saving lives because the former get more reaction and views. These stories and the way they are spun for the media distort pitbulls’ characteristics and give them a scary image. This image is an example of media propaganda as pitbulls are loving and protective dogs. One of the reasons people see pitbulls as having an aggressive nature at heart is because of dog fighting. The article “Are Pitbulls Good With Kids?” states, “Pitbulls were bred to fight in pits, which is how it got its name. They are starved and abused and then brought over to fight with each other. People bet on the dog that they hope will live. It has created the assumption that fighting is all the breed is good for” (Laura). This assumption, however, is completely incorrect.
