It is often believed that if we were to defund the police and take the money elsewhere it won’t necessarily affect the overall safety of society. When it comes to the topic of the dangers of police officers, most of us will agree that it is just an underlying factor. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of a way to solve this issue. Whereas some are convinced that the only way is to take resources from the police, others maintain that a few wrong acts by officers do not accurately represent law enforcement as a whole. The views that believe the police are abusing the control that was given to them, I believe that the majority of the control shown is to keep the people safe. Looking deeper into these competing values would suggest that officers are putting themselves before the people they are meant to protect. While both of these values are important in their own way, I believe that safety is more pertinent to this particular case because, if it not for the police the safety and security that we as Americans feel would be compromised. What I mean by that is that the control and power that we placed in the hands of officers is a key reason for the privilege we have to live without worry. Ultimately, the police are here for the safety of the public, and the defending of freedom in our streets. Yes, there are times where a police officer may abuse their control and power but these are few and far between when it comes to the accounts of lives saved and crimes …show more content…

For Example, The Lancet brings to light that “...officers used chemical irritants to chase peaceful protesters…” This has some merit in importance because chemical irritants can have negative long-lasting effects. What I believe they are trying to communicate here is needless aggressive behavior toward protesters. They go on to elaborate that, “ … protesters from a square near the White House to clear a path for President Trump to attend a photo opportunity.”. In other words, they were there for a purpose, to clear a path for the president. This is no small job and even if the protesters were not an emanate threat they were causing a disturbance in the schedule. One implication could be that the use was not needed and the tactics were too severe for the situation. I see this point but I also understand that they were only doing their job in escorting the President to his next agenda.
In the end, taking the money that is now used to support law enforcement would not contribute to the overall safety of society. As a result, of defunding the police the streets would not become safer but the opposite. By refocusing the money within the departments we will be better equipped to address unnecessary violence by the police. Success can only be undertaken if we put more trust and confidence in the people keeping us safe. Hence, defunding
