Argumentative Essay: Choices & Destinies
Shakespeare once stated, “My only love sprung from my only hate” (1.5.136). This state shows how the protagonists’ in the play made their own choices and their choices were not controlled by others. The protagonists’ still decide to love eachother even though, they know, their parents and families wouldn't agree. In this play, William Shakespeare focuses on the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet whose family feud and bad decision making led to a fatal disaster. Some people may not be able to give the best/smartest advice. The opinions of others should not affect people's choices and destinies because people's own choices are what shape them. For example, In act 1 scene 5 lines 51-57 of Romeo and Juliet Tybalt states, “I can tell by his voice that this man is a Montague. (to his PAGE) Get me my sword, boy. What, does this peasant dare to come here with his face covered by a mask to sneer at and scorn our celebration? Now, by the honor of our family, I do not consider it a crime to kill him. In Act 4, Scene 1, Line numbers 94-100 of Romeo and Juliet Friar Lawrence stated, ”(shows her a vial) Take thou this vial, being then in bed, and this distilled liquor drink thou off, when presently through all thy veins shall run a cold and drowsy humor, for no pulse Shall keep his native progress, but surcease. No warmth, no breath shall testify thou livest. the roses in thy lips and cheeks shall fade” Yes on the opposing side this would prove that people can give us helpful advice, however, on the opposite side, it is most likely that some people won't because a number of people's opinions may not be very smart or helpful. This shows also that maybe if Juliet chose to not drink the vial then, this could provide a change in the story because Romeo wouldn't have thought Juliet is dead when she actually wasn't. This quote supports my argument because it shows how Friar Lawrence is giving Juliet bad advice. Even though some would consider their actions to be impulsive, Juliet may instead have seen it as non impulsive because Friar Lawrence gave Juliet the vail
