When thinking of self driving cars most people think of the future but the future eventually becomes the present. We are so close to the fully self driving future that we need to start thinking of some features on the cars we want like safety. Although some believe there are less computer errors then human errors, there should still be a way to manually override the car because the technology might glitch and go out of control and there might not be roads every where you need to go. There should still be a way to manually override self-driving cars because the technology might glitch and go out of control. According to data recorded from some tests of self driving cars they are progressing by getting better and safer but there are still some …show more content…
The evidence at the moment indicates the technology is moving along nicely, but that doesn't mean we ought to do away with our steering wheels quite yet” (Montenegro). There should still be a steering wheel because the technology is not perfect yet. People don't like to use or buy something that is bad or does not work. If there was still a steering wheel more people would feel safer and more willing to buy one. Self driving cars need as much help as they can get. It doesn’t help the driver of a tesla died while the car was diving itself. Michael C. Dorf the author of a Verdict article stated,“it was bigger news this past summer when the driver of a Tesla being operated in autopilot mode died” (Dorf). The technology did not pull over the car causing the driver to die. Which is another reason people will shy away from buying a fully self driving car. There is no definite answer to what a self-driving car would do when faced with an unavoidable crash. MIT asked questions about the future technology and the morality of self driving cars: “How …show more content…
It is fun and exciting to drive yourself around because you can go anywhere and feel free. The author of an article praising Google’s safety in their self driving cars said, “There's no feeling quite like getting back behind a steering wheel after time away from driving. It's a liberating feeling, a taste of freedom, the ability to go anywhere” (Montenegro). If you manually drive you are able to go anywhere even off road but it would be hard to go off road in a self driving car. In the future if there is only self driving cars and there is an emergency off the public road how will emergency vehicles go off road? On public roads human driving might be banned. Based on the NHTSA guidelines the author stated “it is not too early to begin thinking about whether we should work towards banning human driving on public roads” (Dorf). If human driving is only banned on public roads you can still drive manually off road or on private roads. How will you be able to drive to a off road location or a private road without having a self driving car In order to get to the location. In the future some people are going to want to drive manually instead of using a self driving car like the people nowadays who drive old cars. The problem with old things is that some people want to use them in the future: “the hipsters of 2040 might derive ironic satisfaction from piloting their 2012 Hyundai Sonatas on roads mostly filled with self-driving
